Shree Janjyoti Lower Secondary School at Sukaura

We first visited Shree Janjyoti Lower Secondary school at Sukaura in 2013 - it is several miles walk from Shree Aanku Primary and Shree Achane Higher Secondary school. It has 235 students aged between 5-14 (classes 1-8).  Most students move on to Shree Achane Higher Secondary school for senior classes and college.

The school was built in 1990 and some of its buildings were in very bad repair and plans had been prepared to rebuild these once funding was in place. The government pays the salaries for the 9 teaching staff but did not provide funds for building maintenance.

Working with Room to Read and the Bristol Round Table Breakfast Club we were also able to donate funds to their project to build a new 4 room, 2 storey school which was completed in 2014.

We have continued to support this school with provision of computers, printers and library books.

The 2015 earthquake badly damaged a lot of the school buildings and we were able to provide large tents as temporary schoolrooms, books, pens and other equipment to the students.  The goverment instructed the schools to reopen within a few weeks of the earthquakes.

With the support of the Chelwood Rotary club in North Somerset we have provided a new toilet block and handwashing facilities at the school.  see photo above.
